Festung Guernsey began work clearing the outer defenses at Stp.Talfeste, Vale Castle on Saturday 1st April. 8 or 9 volunteers gave up their time over the weekend to help clear the trenches of trees, soil and rubble.

Within 2-3 hours the first section of trench had been cleared ready for digging, the trees and plants having been chipped on site ready for disposal. Digging out the trenches began on Sunday morning. The first section of trench contained approximately 1ft of soil and boulders, and this was taken by buckets for dispersal around the front of the trenches. By the end of the day, the section between the 2 tobruk pits including a small personnel shelter had almost been cleared. The area between the personnel shelter and the tobruk being the most troublesome. Large amounts of brick and rubbish had been pushed in over the years.
