TELEPHONE BUNKER (Type617)

Situated at La Route des Portellettes, Torteval, lies the best preserved of the four Netzknotenpunkt (Network junction bunkers) which formed part of the Fortress telephone network.

A further 21 Kabelschaltstellen (Cable switching posts) linked the lines leading to the various defenses. The main cable ran from the north of the island to the south west, and was buried two metres deep along its entire length.

The heart of the system was the headquarters complex at La Corbinerie, which the Germans named Tannenberg, with a large repeater station nearby.
